China has its own internet ecosystem, and many international platforms are not accessible without special tools. Basically, all the “western” apps will not work or will not fully work in China. That includes everything that’s Google based, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok etc. 

And believe me, more apps are Google-based than you think. Google Maps won’t work, your email won’t work, sometimes even your banking won’t work (depending on the bank). Overall, if you want to access your typical apps that you use abroad you will need to bypass the firewall.

Not all VPNs work reliably in China. The situation changes often, and some services may stop working temporarily.

We therefore highly recommend using an E-SIM. There are many providers saying they work in China, but by experience E-SIM cards work seemlessly well in China. 

Important: You MUST setup your E-SIM before entering China. You cannot access your app store from within China, so it’s essential to do that beforehand in order to ensure a smooth experience when on the ground.
