China Is Almost Completely Cashless

Unlike many countries where cash and credit cards are still widely used, China has largely skipped physical payments altogether.

Today, most transactions are done through two apps:

  • WeChat Pay
  • Alipay

These apps are accepted everywhere: restaurants, taxis, supermarkets, hotels, shopping malls, and even small street vendors.

If you are not using mobile payments in China, daily life becomes unnecessarily difficult.

Can You Still Use Cash in China?

Cash is technically still accepted, but:

Credit cards are even more limited. Outside of international hotels and major chains, Visa or Mastercard is often not accepted. Important: This includes Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amex etc.

The Two Apps You Must Have

WeChat Pay

WeChat Pay is integrated into the WeChat app, which is used for messaging, social media, and payments all in one.

It’s used for:

Scanning QR codes to pay
Sending money to individuals
Paying in shops, restaurants, and taxis

Note: You basically scan every QR code with WeChat or Alipay and you will automatically be forwarded to a so-called Miniprogram which is kind of a mini website that runs within the WeChat / Alipay interface.

Alipay

Alipay is another essential payment app in China and is often slightly more tourist-friendly to set up.

It also allows you to:

Book transport and hotels
Access travel services and discounts

Travelers should definitely install both for maximum convenience.

Setup is usually quick, but sometimes verification or card issues can happen depending on your bank.
