Spring (March–May)\n

“The Awakening” — 万物复苏

Spring starts in March and gradually moves from southern provinces to the north. The weather isn’t very stable — sometimes cold, sometimes warm. In the north, there can still be dust storms, and in the west, many places aren’t fully awake yet. But in the Jiangnan region, spring flowers begin to bloom beautifully.

⚠️ Avoid the busy May Day (五一) — everyone in China is traveling during this holiday.

Recommended Destinations

Jiangnan Region (Yangtze River Delta): This is where water towns, gardens, and classical Chinese aesthetics come together. Includes Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and surrounding areas in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and Jiangxi.

  • Shanghai: The most modern and international city in China. Spring is very comfortable.
  • Hangzhou: Mountains and water combined — West Lake, Longjing tea plantations, hiking. Near Hangzhou, you can also take a short one-day trip to explore the tea gardens and bamboo forest in Anji.
  • Suzhou & Surrounding Cities: Suzhou is the “Venice of the East,” with typical water towns and classical gardens. Yangzhou, Wuxi, Zhenjiang are also beautiful and chill.
  • Watertowns: If you imagine ancient China with canals and stone bridges — this is it. Examples: Nanxun Ancient Town (free entry, quiet, my favorite, very authentic), Wuzhen (touristy, gated but beautiful), Tongli (less famous, very real).

 

Southern Anhui & Northern Jiangxi: The heart of Huizhou culture, where white walls, black tiles, and vibrant yellow flowers create iconic scenery. Close to my home town.

Some of the most beautiful spring regions in China can be experienced here:

  • Tunxi (Huangshan City): Gateway to Anhui villages.
  • Villages: Xidi, Hongcun, Nanping, Bishan, Taichuan. Check out our video
  • Huangshan Scenic Area: China’s most famous mountain, beautiful but very touristy.
  • Fuxi Village (She County): Birthplace of Huangshan Maofeng Tea.
  • Qiyun Mountain & Qiyun Town (Xiuning): Taoist sacred site.
  • Wuyuan, Jiangxi: Ancient towns, rapeseed flower blossoms.
  • Jingdezhen: China’s porcelain capital. Sanbao Ceramic Village is a hub for international “Zhen-drifters” (foreign artists living there). You can try a pottery workshop. Rainy spring days make kiln-side tea houses feel incredibly cozy.

Tibet: Best in Nyingchi region. In April, peach blossoms bloom under the Himalayas. May is the best time — newly thawed, green, and flowered, without summer crowds. ⚠️ Avoid May Day holiday.

Yunnan:

  • May is one of the best times to explore western Yunnan: Dali, Weishan, Lijiang. Temperatures stay between 15–25°C, with clear blue skies as the dry season ends. Rhododendrons bloom on Cangshan Mountains, and wildflowers line Erhai Lake — very photogenic and comfortable.
  • Dali: Cycle or walk along Erhai Lake, explore Dali Old Town, hike the lower slopes of Cangshan Mountains. Try Bai-style grilled fish, fresh goat cheese, simple Yunnan noodles.
  • Shaxi: Slow down. Walk the old square, visit small temples, enjoy quiet courtyard cafés. Less commercial, more about atmosphere than sights.
  • Weishan: Wander Weishan Ancient Town, focus on food. Snack streets highlight roast meats, handmade noodles, and local street food.
  • Lijiang: Explore three old towns: Lijiang Old Town (largest, most vibrant), Shuhe Ancient Town, and Baisha (quieter, more local). Try Naxi dishes, Yunnan hotpot, and seasonal mushrooms.

After April, I also recommend:

  • Guizhou (highly recommended): Southeast Guizhou, Miao & Dong villages. Best season after April — terrace fields begin to fill with water, moderate temperature, not too crowded. Perfect for culture, villages, and human-interest photography.

  • Yunnan (cool but rainy): Dali, Lijiang — cycle in old towns, Erhai Lake, café hopping, light hiking. Temperatures ~20–25°C, relaxed. Rainy season peaks July–August.

  • Tibet (best season): Lhasa & surrounding areas. Visit monasteries, high-altitude landscapes, road trips across the plateau. Best weather window of the year.

  • Xinjiang (vast & diverse): Grasslands (Ili, northern Xinjiang), long daylight hours. Southern Xinjiang can be very hot but dry, bearable, lots of good food. Road trips, lakes, deserts. Pamir in Tashkurgan.

  • Inner Mongolia (grasslands & sky): Space, silence, stars. Best in July–August. Stay in a yurt, experience Naadam Festival (if timing fits). Watch out for mosquitoes.

  • Qinghai / Gansu (Silk Road landscapes): Rapeseed flower fields in Qinghai Menyuan (July), deserts (Dunhuang), lakes (Qinghai Lake), long drives. Dry, cooler climate, strong visual contrast.

  • Southern Gansu (Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture): Great for self-driving. Grasslands, Tibetan culture, monasteries, horseback riding, hiking. July–August = wet season, monitor road conditions.

  • Sichuan West (Aba & Garzê): May–June = spring flowers. July–August = rainy season, afternoon showers, slippery mountain roads. Jiuzhaigou, Hailuogou Glacier Park, Tibetan grasslands, monasteries. Great for self-drive from Chengdu. Avoid Seda — large monastery, limited foreign access.

  • Northeast China (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning): Great time to travel to the North Korean border or to China’s Northern most city.\n

⚠️ Avoid October 1–7 (Golden Week) — extremely crowded. After October 7 is ideal. Crisp air, clear skies, very comfortable temperatures.

Recommended Regions

  • Beijing & The Great Wall: Covered with red leaves, a photographer’s paradise.
  • Western Sichuan (Ganzi & Aba): Autumn colors, palette-like landscapes. Chengdu — cool breeze, hotpot, pandas.
  • Jiangnan: Same as spring. Hangzhou — fragrant osmanthus, colorful autumn leaves. Southern Anhui & Jiangxi villages — harvest season, crisp weather, vivid colors.
  • Guilin: Cool, ~20°C, low humidity, clear skies, rivers reflect mountains — perfect photography.
  • Guizhou: Fanjingshan — misty, autumn colors, perfect for trekking/photos. Miao & Dong villages — cool, golden terraces, cultural immersion.
  • Hunan: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — cool, minimal clouds, open views, rich autumn foliage. Fenghuang Ancient Town — moderate tourists, clear rivers, autumn colors merge with architecture.
  • Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La — 15–25°C, clear skies, snow mountains and grasslands. Yuanyang terraces — harvest season, golden fields, mirrored water.
  • Southern Xinjiang: Kashgar, Tashkurgan, Pamir Plateau — dry, clear, best for driving & highland photography. Northern Xinjiang — Kanas, Ili — grasslands & lakes vivid, red leaves in valleys, snow mountains, desert edges golden.

  • Escape cold:
    Hainan Island (Sanya) — China’s Hawaii, Russian tourists in recent years.
    Yunnan — Xishuangbanna, Mile, Kunming.
  • Festival atmosphere: After Spring Festival,
    Fujian &
    Guangdong — best for authentic New Year traditions. Flower markets, festivities, very lively. Best 4–5 days after Spring Festival.

  1. Yangtze Delta – Jiangnan Plum Rain Season: Mid-June to early July (3–4 weeks). Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing, Anhui, Jiangxi. Endless rain, high humidity, clothes never dry, slippery roads, rising temperatures. Tip: Move northwest (Qinghai, Gansu). For Plum Rain: “Think of it as a 24/7 outdoor sauna. If you visit Jiangnan in June, waterproof shoes are more important than an umbrella.”
  2. Furnace Cities Summer Heat: July–August. Worst: Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanchang. Hot & touristy: Xi’an, Shanghai, Beijing. Walking in these cities is like being in a giant hair dryer. Tip: Go west — Yunnan, Guizhou, Western Sichuan, Tibet.
  3. Damp Cold in Southern Winter: Late Dec–early Feb. Yangtze River cities (Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Changsha). No central heating. 0–5°C but humid and bone-chilling. Tip: Go north for snow & heating, or south (Sanya, Xishuangbanna).
  4. Coastal Typhoon Season: August–September. Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Hainan. Flights/train cancellations, possible hotel confinement. Check if visiting islands (Xiamen, Pingtan).
  5. National Holiday Crowds:
    • May 1st (3–5 days)
    • October 1–7 (Golden Week)
    • Spring Festival (Jan–Feb, 7–10 days)
      Massive crowds, congested transport, skyrocketing tickets and hotels, long lines. Tip: Avoid or prepare accordingly.
